Brake Manor

The design was for a new three storey building to hold thirty-two individual rooms, all with ensuite facilities, together with dining rooms, kitchen and all other facilities required for a new, modern care home.

The design required careful thought for fire safety and escape, in the event of having to evacuate occupants from building, taking into consideration the general age and possible infirmity of the residents.

The building was designed as a timber frame building with an overall frontage in excess of 65 metres. However, due to the steeply sloping nature of the site, large structural retaining walls were also required, but with clever use of timber cladding, the mass concrete areas have been minimised from view.

The main feature of the building was to be an arched "Sedum" green roof.

This was a joint venture with another local Lostwithiel Architect (Christopher Jones), where we were asked to prepare and obtain Building Regulation approval for the project.

Whilst undertaking major refurbishment works around this Grade II Listed Building estate, the clients brief for this 'L' shaped set of buildings was for full conversion to dwelling of the two storey apple/potato store, with the double height cow shed being converted into a meeting/function room.
